PEEL — Adam Safaoui has had lots of success in gymnastics and now his younger brother Noah is following in his footsteps, with both competing at the Ontario Gymnastics Championships at Rose City Gymnastics Club in Windsor on April 12.
The 13-year old Adam, who trains under coaches Zhaohui Huang and Steven Sugrim at Team Futures Gymnastics in Mississauga, is getting ready to represent Ontario at the Eastern Canadian Gymnastics Championships in May in Moncton.
Noah, 8, has been in gymnastics since age 5. Under Gymnastics Ontario rules, boys can not compete before they turn 8. Competing in level 1 for 8 and 9-year-olds, he had a good showing in his first provincial meet.
He scored 52.800 and finished fifth in pommel mushroom and rings, he was seventh in parallel bars and eighth in high bar. He would up 11th all around among 60 gymnasts. Noah, who is in Grade 3 at Eldorado Public School in Brampton, is also a competitive swimmer at COBRA Swim Club.
Adam, a Grade 8 student at Eldorado, recently picked up the silver all-around medal while representing team Ontario at the Kyle Shewfelt Gymnastics competition in Calgary. He won the 2015 Ontario championship for level 4, under 13. He took gold in rings and high bar, was third in pommel horse, fourth in vault and parallel bars, was fifth in floor and finished with an overall score of 72.20. That success earned him the chance to go on to the Eastern Canadian championship.
