STUTTGART, GER (October 5, 2019) – The Canadian women’s artistic gymnastics team has officially qualified a full four-person team for the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo following the completion of the qualifying rounds at the 2019 FIG Artistic Gymnastics World Championships in Stuttgart, GER.
The team, composed of Ellie Black of Halifax, NS, Brooklyn Moors of Cambridge, ON, Shallon Olsen of Surrey, BC, Ana Padurariu of Whitby, ON, and Victoria Woo of Brossard, QC, finished the qualifying rounds in fifth place with a total score of 162.922, qualifying them for both the team finals which take place on Tuesday, and garnering them that coveted team spot for the Tokyo Olympics.
“I’m really proud of the work our team was able to do in the qualifications,” said Black who is participating in her sixth World Championships for Canada. “(Qualifying) was a main goal for this year, so to be able to achieve that, and to be sending a full team to Tokyo next year is just incredible. It really shows all of the work we’ve been doing here, and back home, and so it’s a really special process to go through and we’re just going to keep getting better, and improving as we work towards Tokyo next year.”
The USA was the top qualifying team after the qualifying rounds with a total score of 174.205. China finished second with a score of 169.161, and Russian rounded out the top-3 with a score of 168.080.
Black and Moors have both qualified for the all-around finals which take place on Thursday, while Black also qualified for the beam finals which take place on Sunday.
Olsen, the reigning silver-medalist on vault from the 2018 World Championships, has qualified for the vault finals on Saturday while Padurariu, also a silver medalist from the 2018 World Championships on beam, also qualified for the beam finals on Sunday.
Next up for Canada is the men’s team competing in sub-division 5 of the men’s qualifying rounds which take place on Monday morning. The top-9 teams – minus China, Russia, and Japan who booked their spots at the 2018 World Championships – will qualify a team for Tokyo.
