Ontario’s national level men’s and women’s artistic gymnasts competed at the 2016 Elite Canada meet this past weekend (February 5th-7th) at the Canada Games Centre in Halifax, NS.
Hosted by Gymnastics Nova Scotia, the Halifax Alta Gymnastics Club, Taiso Gymnastics Training Centre, and Titan’s Gymnastics and Trampoline Club, Elite Canada brings together the top athletes from across Canada from the novice, junior, and senior categories. For athletes eligible for Rio, this was there first of many evaluative competitions. Throughout the weekend there were a total of 108 medals awarded, and an Elite Canada titleholder named in each category.
Megan Roberts (East York Gymnastics) took 2nd place in the senior category behind Isabela Onyshko of Brandon, MB and beating out Olympian and hometown favourite Ellie Black. Jade Chrobok (Gemini Gymnastics) was named women’s junior champion followed by teammate Ana Padurariu (Gemini Gymnastics) in 2nd. Leah Tindale (Manjak’s Gymnastics) was named women’s novice champion.
Ontario men also reached the podium: Senior Sam Zakutney placed 1st on the parallel bars, 2nd on floor and 5th overall. Anthony Tawfik (Futures Gymnastics) was crowned men’s junior champion while Elel Baker (Mississauga) took the junior bronze. Iaonnis Chronopoulos (Futures Gymnastics) placed 2nd in the novice category.
