Olsen, Woo win silver medals at Massilia gymnastics event

MARSEILLE, France — Shallon Olsen of Coquitlam, B.C., and Rose-Kaying Woo of La Prairie, Que., each won a silver medal while teammate Megan Roberts of Toronto just missed out on a bronze on the final day of competition Sunday at the Massilia gymnastics event.

Woo, the reigning Canadian junior champion, placed second in the uneven bars while Olsen was runner up on vault, as both 2016 Olympic hopefuls came through with strong performances.In the vault final Russia’s Maria Paseka took the gold with a score of 14.550 with Olsen a mere .033 points behind in second place with 14.517.

In the uneven bars final, Woo scored 14.000 points to earn her trip to the podium as runner-up behind gold medal winner Darya Spiridonova of Russia with 14.633 points.

Roberts came tantalizingly close to earning another medal for the Canada but lost out in a tie break after placing posting an identical score of 13.700 with Italy’s Lara Mori of Italy in the floor final.

Roberts, the only Canadian to qualify for more than one final, had to settle for fourth on floor and sixth on vault.

“All three girls handled the day really well,” said Canadian coach Lawson Hamer of Toronto.

“They were very focused delivered some really good performances.”

Meanwhile at the trampoline and tumbling age group world championship in Daytona Beach, Florida, Sarah Milette of Montreal bounced to the bronze medal in the women’s 17-18 individual event.

Milette, who also won a silver medal in the synchro event with partner Sophiane Methot of Montreal, qualified fourth in the prelims and clinched the bronze with a score of 49.570 points.

Silva Mueller of Germany won the gold with a score of 51.150 and Yuki Yasuta of Japan took the silver with 50.120.
