NEWMARKET, ONT. — In the last national meet before qualifications begin for the 2015 Pan American Games next year in Toronto, Olympians Rosie MacLennan and Karen Cockburn resumed dominance in Canada, winning gold and silver on individual trampoline Sunday at the Canada Cup.
“I maintained the height and technique I wanted, even though yesterday’s prelim routine was stronger,” said MacLennan, of King City, Ont. The reigning Canadian and Olympic champion topped the field with a total of 159.505 points.
Cockburn, a three-time Olympic medal winner, scored 153.225 points to clinch the silver medal.
“I’m happy I got to come in and get the results I wanted,” said Cockburn, 33, who returned to national competition in May after taking a 14-month hiatus from the sport to start a family.
“I’ve lost muscle mass in my legs so jumping high is a challenge, but I’ve got my style and form back.”
Fellow national team member Samantha Sendel of Aurora, Ont. took the bronze with 152.780.
In the men’s individual trampoline Keegan Soehn of Red Deer, Alta., secured Canada’s only spot on the podium with 159.925 points, good for the silver medal.
Japan’s Tetsuya Sotomura took the gold and 164.685 points, and Daniel Schmidt of Germany won bronze with 153.920.
“Today I worked on keeping calm and tried to think of it as just another practice, which seems to have paid off,” said Soehn.
Double mini trampoline gold went to Denis Vachon of Burlington, Ont., who scored 147.900 points. Keegan Soehn picked up another silver with 145.400, and Dennis Oppenlander of Regina, Sask, earned bronze with 144.200.
Tamara O’Brien of Coquitlam, B.C. won the women’s title.
In tumbling, Canadian men’s champion Jon Schwaiger of Burlington, Ont. won the men’s title and Rachael Letsche of Great Britain took home the women’s gold.
