World Age Group Championships

DAYTONA Beach — Sophiane Methot and Sarah Milette were the first Canadians to bounce onto the podium at the world age group trampoline championships, winning the silver medal Thursday on opening day.

Methot and Milette, both from Montreal, won the silver medal in the 17-18 year-old women’s synchro event in a field of 20 teams.

Aileen Roesler and Mona Weiler of Germany won the gold with a score of 44.400 points followed by Methot and Milette with 44.300 and Isabelle Songhurst and Zaynub Akbar of Great Britain with 44.100 points.

“At first I was really stressed but after the first trick, everything went really well, said Methot, who has been competing with Milette in the syncro event for three years.

“We weren’t expecting to win a medal. When we made finals it was a plus but after we finished sixth in the prelims we wanted to stay sixth or do better.”

Milette, like her partner, admitted to being nervous at the outset, but settled down once they got their routine underway.

“It was definitely one of the better routines we’ve ever done,” said Milette.

Canada’s other opening day finalist was Rylee Davison of Oakville, Ont.,  who placed eighth in women’s 13-14 tumbling.

On Friday the top Canadians were Jeremy Chartier of Montreal who placed 5th in men’s 13-14 individual trampoline, Kyle Carragher of Coquitlam, B.C., who was fifth in the men’s 17-18 year-old double mini trampoline and Sarah Wheatley of Toronto who placed fourth in the women’s 17-18 double mini.

Competition continues on Saturday.
