Valerie Abassi – Stan Stenoff Career Coaching Achievement Award

Valerie has been a true inspiration for many gymnasts who have continued in artistic gymnastics through the years.  She has developed athletes at many clubs in the Eastern region, ending her 50 years of coaching with Club de Gymnastique Les Sittelles.

There are few who exemplify the experience and knowledge required to be as influential and successful as a coach as Valerie Abassi.

Valerie followed her passion for sport through the completion of a diploma in sport and recreation at UBC.  With a background in gymnastics she went on to teach various levels including mom and tot, kinder-gym, recreational, pre-competitive, and level 1-6 athletes.

She was committed to technical precision through the teaching of necessary skills for gymnasts to build upon.  She reinforced a positive mindset of resilience.  Valerie instilled confidence in her athletes that went beyond their identity as a gymnast.

She demonstrated an understanding and sensitivity to the challenges of athletes who experienced inequity.  It was of utmost importance to Valerie that athletes felt accepted and she prioritized creating an inclusive environment in which all students felt safe and welcome.

Valerie’s dedication, engagement, authenticity, empathy, knowledge, and commitment to the sport of gymnastics is an everlasting gift to our community.
